British Commission for Military History (BCMH)

Description

The British Commission for Military History (BCMH) was founded in 1965 as the national branch of the International Commission for Military History. It serves as a forum for the discussion and promotion of military history in the broadest sense, without restriction as to period or region. Its constitution describes it as a members' association, and its membership is drawn from those working in military history in universities, museums, archives, defence and the armed forces, as well as media, heritage and cultural studies, independent scholars and private individuals.

The main activity of the BCMH is the annual programme of two or three conferences, usually held at a major UK academic, museum or armed forces venue, and the Commission reports that it also hosts and organises an annual New Research in Military History conference for postgraduate and early career historians. Its journal, the British Journal for Military History, is open access and peer-reviewed, and the Commission reports that through the journal and its conferences it brings scholarship in military history to an audience beyond academia. As a branch of the International Commission for Military History it is invited to send two delegates to the annual Congress of Military History.

The Commission offers its members support towards conference panels and papers, and supports a postgraduate student presenting at the doctoral workshop of the International Congress.
