Design Societies Research Unit (DSRU)

Description

The Design Societies Research Unit (DSRU) brings together expertise in Science and Technology Studies (STS) and design at Goldsmiths, and beyond, to engage technoscientific and environmental matters of care and concern. It explores how design is implicated in climate change, socioenvironmental issues and the development of new technologies, combining design and STS through practice-based research, and its work investigates alternative knowledge and making practices, notably activist, decolonial and feminist approaches.

The unit consolidates longstanding expertise in and engagements between Design and STS at Goldsmiths, combining practice-based design research with empirical social research. It cultivates international research networks with scholars and practitioners through research visits, co-organised colloquia and new research collaborations, and its activities involve organising academic colloquia (seminars, workshops, book launches) and practitioner-led events (masterclasses, practitioner talks). It also runs the Design Societies Studio, a platform for early career and postgraduate researchers to experiment with combining practice-research and other research modes.
