The Centre for Art and Ecology at Goldsmiths, University of London, supports practice-based and interdisciplinary research in the expanded field of art and ecology. The Centre fosters new artistic approaches to ecological issues and supports a growing international network of researchers and partner organisations. Its members' research is grounded in diverse forms of ecological knowledge and investigates how artmaking can support healthy ecosystems, greater eco-literacy and create leverage for eco-social justice.
The Centre supports transdisciplinary dialogue and exchange on a wide range of themes, including genealogies of ecology and ecological practice, urban and bioregional ecologies, living and food systems, planetary healing, biomaterials, queer ecologies, ecological grief, eco-pedagogy, citizen science, climate resilience and adaptation, energy cycling, seed sovereignty, and emergent interfaces of nature, technology and data. Situated in South East London, much of its research considers how climate change impacts, including pollution, biodiversity and habitat loss, and food and energy poverty, exacerbate inequalities.
Rooted in an understanding that planetary health is intricately connected with social justice, the Centre aims to cultivate a test site within the urban biome of Lewisham that includes the Art Research Garden and Art and Ecology Laboratory. A Kitchen Studio is in development in partnership with the Kitchen Research Unit.
