Material Research Project

Description

The Material Research Project is a long-standing research project in Graduate Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Based in the Methods and Materials Room of the graduate painting area, it spearheads the role of materials within the creative process. Its aim is to research and promote material knowledge, testing new ways to develop the relation between image and material, including the exploration of diverse cultural materials and methodologies. It houses a growing materials library containing pigment specimens from the Winsor & Newton archives and paper samples from John Purcell Paper, and it has links with several departments within UCL and external links with John Purcell Paper, Colart and Winsor & Newton. Its numbered symposium series, Colour & Poetry, has run from 2019 to its eighth edition in March 2026. With the Discourse Project, it is one of the two research projects from which the Slade Methods Room stems.
