Archaeology South-East (ASE) is the commercial archaeology division of the UCL Institute of Archaeology. It was founded in 1974 as the Sussex Archaeological Field Unit and has been part of the Institute since then. Its services cover archaeological assessment, fieldwork and survey, built heritage, post-excavation and specialist services, and public engagement and outreach, delivered from offices in Sussex and Essex and a further base within the UCL Institute of Archaeology building in central London. ASE publishes the results of its projects and research in a variety of formats, including multi-site monographs, articles in county archaeological society journals and notes in popular magazines, and publishes major sites and research as peer-reviewed monographs and occasional papers under the SpoilHeap publications imprint, many of them available open access.
