The German History Society (GHS)

Description

The German History Society (GHS) advances the study and understanding of the history of Germany and the German-speaking world in its broadest global context. It promotes learning in the discipline through events, publications, grants for study and research, and a network of academics, students and other individuals and organisations interested in German history. Founded in 1979 at the Institute of Historical Research in London, it is a registered charity run on a volunteer basis by academics from institutions of higher education in the UK and Ireland. Membership comes with a subscription to the Society's quarterly journal, German History, which publishes work on all periods of German history and all German-speaking areas worldwide, and the Society has its own book series, Studies in German History, published with Oxford University Press. It holds an annual conference and co-organises a recurring workshop on medieval Germany with the German Historical Institute London. The Society offers bursaries and grants for postgraduate and early career researchers, including language course grants funded jointly with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and awards prizes that include a postgraduate essay prize, an undergraduate dissertation prize and a prize for the best article published each year in German History.
