History Lab, Institute of Historical Research
ActiveDescription
History Lab is the national network for postgraduate students in history and related disciplines, based at the Institute of Historical Research. It serves as an intellectual and social forum that connects and supports the postgraduate history community, organising blogs, conferences, seminars and training workshops, and it reports over 1,000 members, welcoming any period, geographical location, methodology and area of historical study. Its research seminar meets fortnightly on Thursday evenings online, and it holds an annual conference at the Institute; the most recent, Shaping Histories: Representation and Perception through Time, took place on 24 July 2025. Since 2020 it has awarded the Olivette Otele Prize, open to Black UK-based PhD students in history or related disciplines, which offers the winner fast-tracked publication and a cash prize. The network is run by a committee of postgraduate students.
