Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH)

Description

The Bibliography of British and Irish History (BBIH) is a resource for historians at any level who are researching, teaching and studying the local histories of the British Isles and Ireland and the wider histories of the British and Irish worlds from 55BCE to the present day. It is a research and publishing project of the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and the Belgian academic press Brepols, updated three times a year by specialist bibliographers at the IHR working with a team of academic historians. It was created using systematic and extensive surveys of data on all relevant new publications, including weekly reviews of 800 academic journals and records of the British Library. The bibliography reports 684,192 records of books, edited collections, journal articles and book chapters as of its June 2026 update, adds roughly 10,000 new records a year and organises its material into some 8,000 thematic search categories. Since 2024 it has worked with the Monumental Brass Society to improve the discoverability of the Society's journal. Until the end of 2024 the Royal Historical Society also funded and jointly managed the bibliography, which is available by subscription through Brepols.
