Communication Acoustics Lab (COMMA)

The Communication Acoustics Lab (COMMA) is a research group hosted in the Centre for Digital Music (C4DM) at Queen Mary University of London. It conducts research into the ways people experience sound and technologies to understand, model and enhance musical communication between humans and between humans and machines. Its research approach blends machine learning and AI with experimental (hypothesis-led) and creative (discovery-led) research practices to understand different modalities of experience and interaction between the digital music user (listeners, performers, producers) and music and sound as a multimodal semiotic system.
Its work includes studies of timbre perception and semantics, the singing voice, orchestration and the moral narratives of popular music lyrics. The lab reports funding from UKRI, the British Academy, SSHRC, Yamaha, the BBC and Queen Mary University of London.
