Viking Society for Northern Research

Description

The Viking Society for Northern Research is a learned society, with membership open to all, dedicated to furthering and promoting the study of the medieval North through publications, meetings and financial support. Founded in 1892 as the Orkney, Shetland, and Northern Society or Viking Club, it exists under its Law-Book to give support in research, reading and general interest to scholars and members of the public interested in the languages, literatures, arts, history and material culture of medieval Scandinavia and related territories, including the British Isles. It publishes an annual periodical, Saga-Book, whose earliest issue appeared in 1895, and editions, translations, textbooks and studies of medieval Scandinavian texts alongside a memorial lecture series, making virtually all of its publications available digitally two years after they appear. The Society meets three times a year, twice in London and once at a different British university each summer, and organises an annual student conference. Its Research Support Fund makes small grants to graduate students and independent scholars among its members for research projects or travel to conferences and courses, and it awards an annual bursary for postgraduate study or research in Scandinavia and annual prizes to students at British universities who excel in the study of the early North. Its postal address is at University College London, where it also holds meetings and whose Department of Scandinavian Studies is affiliated with it; under an agreement of 1931 the Society's books and collections pass to UCL, whose Librarian serves as its Honorary Librarian and whose Scandinavian collections its members may borrow from.
