Researching Education, Media, Arts, and Play (REMAP) is a research centre within the UCL Institute of Education, one of six centres of the Department of Culture, Communication and Media, based in the Emerald Street building alongside the UCL Knowledge Lab. It began life in 2012 as the DARE Collaborative, a research partnership with the British Film Institute focused on the digital arts in society, including education broadly conceived; its earlier website, darecollaborative.net, was last updated in June 2022. The centre describes itself as a community of scholars, activists and practitioners whose research reshapes the disciplinary domains of media, arts and play, foregrounding interdisciplinary collaboration and co-creation with communities and creative industry partners, and treating pedagogical practice itself as a site of enquiry, with schools and educational communities engaged as partners and co-researchers. Its members come mainly from the Media, Music, Art, Museology, and English and Drama sections of the department, alongside cultural organisations with an interest in arts, culture and new literacies, and their research spans practice-based work in computer arts, game design, animation and cinematography, media creativity with refugee children, and representation, gender and queer theory, as well as longstanding interests in film theory and practice, game studies, disability studies and media literacy. The centre lists its expertise as including practice-based and practice-as-research methodologies, creative and audiovisual methods, research on cultural digital archive practices, and media and AI literacy, approached through critical perspectives on policy and practice. It reports its members' work and seminars through its blog and archive, and its UCL page lists its events, including a hybrid book launch in November 2026 on the role of television and video in early child development.
