Art, Ecologies, Infrastructures
ActiveDescription
Art, Ecologies, Infrastructures is a research cluster at The Courtauld that brings together faculty expertise in art and material culture engaging with ecology, environment, systems and habitat, to develop new ways of thinking about art history through ecological and infrastructural approaches. It takes a broad social and intersectional perspective on ecological art histories, while foregrounding infrastructure as a method for interrogating the material, political and symbolic intersections of human-built systems and natural environments, and as a lens on ecological entanglements, extractive histories and power dynamics. Its questions include what an infrastructural approach can bring to art history, how artists have engaged critically with infrastructures, and what art history can offer to infrastructures of resistance. The cluster held events in March 2026.
