Digital X Climates

Description

Digital X Climates is an interdisciplinary network for research, dialogue and public engagement on how digital technologies entangle with environmental, social and political ecologies. It examines the material infrastructures, labour, cultural narratives and policy arrangements that sustain digital systems, from data centres and supply chains to platforms and algorithms, and it challenges narratives of digital immateriality by foregrounding the environmental costs and human consequences of digital technology within planetary and ecological limits.

Co-led by three academics in the Department of Digital Humanities at King's College London and affiliated with the Digital Futures Institute's Centre for Digital Culture, the network brings digital humanities scholars together to ask how digital systems contribute to the climate crisis and global inequality, and to examine the challenges of asserting legal, regulatory, cultural and design limits on digital capitalism. It launched in February 2026, first under the working title Digital Ecologies Network, with a programme of talks on education for sustainability, streaming platforms, surveillance agriculture and participatory mapping.
