Description

The Global Digital Cultures Research Group, in the Department of Digital Humanities at King's College London, studies how the digital world looks from non-Western perspectives. Its members examine how people around the world produce, appropriate, adapt, repurpose and resist digital technologies that mostly originate in a handful of Western and East Asian countries, and how local practices of digital engagement circulate and change as they travel regionally and globally, working from a range of disciplinary and methodological traditions.

Members' projects include digital surveillance in everyday life, digital rights in the Global South, Chinese technology expansion into neighbouring countries, digital archives that challenge colonial narratives in South Africa, refugees and humanitarian digital economies, AI and land relations in Latin America, and digitalisation programmes in Kazakhstan. The group runs Going Global Talks, a biweekly online seminar with international guest speakers, and has held dated events in most academic years since 2021, some co-organised with other units at King's and with the Human Sciences Research Centre at IIIT Hyderabad.
