Women's Art Library (WAL)

Description

The Women's Art Library is a collection of material documenting art by women, founded in 1982 as the Women Artists Slide Library and now part of Special Collections and Archives at Goldsmiths, University of London. Its holdings span slides, artists' publications, exhibition ephemera, catalogues, audio and video tape, photographs and digital media, with sub-collections such as the Women of Colour Index and the archive of the Women's International Art Club (1900 to 1974). Before the collection came to Goldsmiths in the early 2000s, the organisation worked as an artists' organisation and published a magazine, Make. The collection has its own curator, and with the journal Feminist Review it runs the Art in the Archive Bursary, a themed award for artistic research using the collection, most recently awarded in 2026. It also works with the Birth Rites Collection and the Goldsmiths Exhibition Hub on artistic research residencies.
