The Prehistoric Society

Active

Description

The Prehistoric Society is an international learned society that researches, protects and promotes the global archaeology of deep human history, based on material evidence from the past. Founded in 1908 as the East Anglian Society of Prehistorians, it took its present name in 1935 and has been a Charitable Incorporated Organisation since 2025, with its postal address at the Institute of Archaeology in London. It publishes the annual peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, the newsletter PAST and the Prehistoric Society Research Papers monograph series, and runs a programme of lectures, conferences and study tours each year, in person and online, including annual joint lectures with regional archaeological and antiquarian societies. It makes annual grants and awards, among them a Research Fund for small-scale research projects, a Collections Study Award for work on museum collections and archives, a Radiocarbon Award that provides radiocarbon dates, student travel bursaries, conference scholarships, and prizes for an undergraduate dissertation and for the best contribution to its journal. Through its advocacy it speaks out for landscapes, monuments, museums and artefacts under threat, and it reports over 1,500 members in 40 countries.
