The Orwell Foundation is an independent charity that uses the work of George Orwell to promote political writing and to bring hidden lives and uncomfortable truths to light, with subjects including poverty, political extremism and the corruption of language. It awards the annual Orwell Prizes, now five prizes for political writing, political fiction, journalism, exposing Britain's social evils and reporting homelessness, each worth between £3,000 and £5,000 to the winner, and runs the Orwell Youth Prize for young writers across the UK. Alongside the prizes it runs school programmes, an annual Orwell Lecture, debates, dramatised live readings and online resources, and, under licence from the Orwell Estate, publishes work by and about Orwell. Originally established as The Orwell Prize, whose two original prizes for books and journalism date from 1994, it registered as a charitable incorporated organisation in 2015 and took its present name in 2017, the year its partnership with University College London began. It is governed by a board of trustees and reports that, having no endowment, it raises its funding through grants, sponsorship and individual donations.
