Description

The Centre for Knowledge Organisation Research (CeKOR) is a research centre hosted by the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL), founded by members of the department in September 2025. It studies how knowledge is categorised, classified, ordered and labelled, including the knowledge organisation systems built for that purpose and the ideas and debates around them, in a field with a strong theoretical and ethical dimension. Knowledge organisation is traditionally part of library and information studies, and the centre treats it as an interdisciplinary field also researched in English, linguistics, computer science, philosophy and Early Modern studies; it aims to bring researchers from these disciplines together and to generate more research on, and awareness of, the subject nationally and internationally. Research by its members covers art, music and cultural heritage knowledge organisation, ontologies, critical analysis of knowledge organisation systems, the application of literary theories to the field, AI and large language models in systems for classification, faceted classification theory, knowledge organisation in historical documents and the history of knowledge organisation. The centre grows out of the institutional history of the department in classification theory, and it held its first event, a colloquium, in June 2026.
