Description

The Centre for Applied Linguistics is a centre for research and consultancy in the broad field of applied linguistics, based in the Department of Culture, Communication and Media at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE), University College London, and led by two co-directors. Its stated mission is to promote the IOE as an international centre for research and teaching in applied linguistics, in areas including critical linguistics, bilingualism and multilingualism, second and additional language acquisition, language testing and pedagogies, discourse and interactional analysis, linguistic ethnography, multimodal, health, professional and intercultural communication, English as a global language, literacy, corpus linguistics, language-in-education policy, and language, identity, gender and sexuality. It aims to seek external funding for research and consultancy, to foreground its work through publications, conferences and seminars, to build research networks and partnerships nationally, internationally and across UCL, and to feed research into teaching and doctoral supervision. Its research groups include the Second Language Cognition and Brain Lab and the UCL Health Communication Network, and it lists collaborations with the Cross-London Sociolinguistics Seminars, the London Second Language Acquisition Research Forum, the London TESOL Research Forum, the International Consortium for Communication in Healthcare and the MIRCo International Centre for Interdisciplinary Research. Its consultancy work includes UCL BiLingo, an education and information service giving research-based advice on childhood bilingualism and multilingualism and on English as an Additional Language, and it teaches MA programmes in Applied Linguistics and in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages alongside MPhil and PhD study.
