Institute of Arts, Design and Performance, De Montfort
ActiveDescription
The Institute of Arts, Design and Performance is one of seven research and innovation institutes launched together by De Montfort University on 31 March 2025. It brings together research across architecture, art and design, fashion and textiles, dance, drama and performance studies, creative writing, photographic history, cinema and television history, and music technology and sonic arts.
Its work is organised in two clusters, Creative Practices and their histories, and Circular Design. The first contains research groups in photographic history, cinema and television history, dance, drama and performance studies, and music, technology and innovation, and describes practice-informed research shared through termly work-in-progress seminars and public-facing symposia, alongside creative approaches to archives, performance, exhibitions and public engagement, and third sector and heritage partnerships.
Members work in practice-based research, knowledge transfer and commercial research as well as more traditional academic research, and collaborate with third sector, charitable, governmental and commercial partners. The institute reports that its researchers were returned to three units of assessment in the Research Excellence Framework 2021, covering art and design, architecture, built environment and planning, and music, drama, dance, performing arts, film and screen studies, and that more than 70 per cent of the research in each unit was rated internationally excellent or world leading.
