Description

Soillse was a national research network for the maintenance and revitalisation of Gaelic language and culture in Scotland. It brought together the University of the Highlands and Islands as lead partner with the universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and later with Glasgow Caledonian University, Heriot-Watt University, the University of Strathclyde and the University of the West of Scotland. Funded by the Scottish Funding Council, it ran a programme of research, doctoral studentships and publication on Gaelic language shift, community language use and language policy. The network concluded at the end of March 2023 and announced its closure that June. Its research materials are held in an open repository under the Language Sciences Institute at the University of the Highlands and Islands, and its work is continued by a successor project that names it as its predecessor.
