Historical Thesaurus of English (HTE)
ActiveDescription
The Historical Thesaurus of English is a research resource at the University of Glasgow that has compiled and maintains a thesaurus arranging the recorded vocabulary of English by meaning, from Old English to the present. Work began in 1965 and the resource has been developed continuously since, supported by the university on an open ended basis alongside a succession of external research grants. It is led by a director and a deputy director, the latter holding a lectureship created specifically for the thesaurus, and is advised by a board of academics drawn from Glasgow and from nine other institutions. It received a Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2017, and its editorial team continues to publish on the classification methods that underpin the resource. A companion thesaurus of Old English is published on its own site.
