The Abbotsford Trust

Active

Description

The Abbotsford Trust cares for Abbotsford, the house Sir Walter Scott built near Melrose, together with its estate, gardens and collections. Incorporated in 2007 to take the property into independent charitable ownership, it employs a heritage team with curatorial staff and holds a collection of some four thousand six hundred items of furniture, ceramics, textiles and papers assembled by Scott and his successors. It runs an enquiry route for researchers and supports research projects on the house and its contents. Scott's library of about nine thousand volumes is housed at Abbotsford but is owned separately by the Faculty of Advocates Abbotsford Collection Trust. The library was catalogued to international standards by the Faculty of Advocates, which also provides the route by which researchers reach it. The two trusts work together through a joint collections management committee and a shared advisory committee.
