The David Livingstone Trust

Active

Description

The Scottish National Memorial to David Livingstone Trust, which operates as the David Livingstone Trust and presents itself publicly as David Livingstone Birthplace, cares for the birthplace museum at Blantyre in South Lanarkshire. Constituted in 1930, following the opening of the memorial in 1929, it holds a collection of around 4,000 objects relating to the explorer David Livingstone, together with a reference library of 665 catalogued items available to researchers by appointment. The Trust states a repatriation and remediation policy addressing the colonially collected nature of parts of its holdings. Its collections research runs through an international partnership with museum partners in Zambia, Tanzania, South Africa, Malawi and Botswana, and has included co-production work with community organisations in Scotland. The Trust took over operational control of the site in 2017 and is no longer part of the National Trust for Scotland.
