Museum of Lead Mining
ActiveDescription
The Museum of Lead Mining at Wanlockhead in Dumfries and Galloway is run by the Wanlockhead Museum Trust, which was formed in 1974 and holds museum accreditation. It cares for the Wanlockhead Miners' Library, established in 1756 by thirty-two men for their mutual improvement and described by the museum as among the oldest subscription libraries in Europe, which admitted women from 1784. The library's collection is formally designated a Recognised Collection of National Significance under the Museums Galleries Scotland scheme. Alongside it the museum collects and interprets the social and industrial history of lead mining in the village and its district.
