Scottish Maritime Museum

Active

Description

The Scottish Maritime Museum was founded in 1983 to care for Scotland's maritime collection, and runs two sites, at Irvine in Ayrshire and the Denny Ship Model Experiment Tank at Dumbarton. Its holdings are a Recognised Collection of National Significance under the Museums Galleries Scotland scheme, listed there at over 44,000 objects of shipbuilding and boatbuilding equipment, marine engines, vessels, archives and library material; the museum's own account separately describes a shipyard archive and an oral history collection. Researchers are served by a curatorial team and by a maritime library, described on one museum page as reached by appointment and on another as a volunteer-run reading room open on Mondays and Thursdays, and no page names an online catalogue of the collection. The museum states that it cannot offer a full research service and works to a limit of around 45 minutes of staff time for each enquiry.
