Barra and Vatersay Historical Society (Comunn Eachdraidh Bharraidh Agus Bhatarsaidh)
ActiveDescription
Barra and Vatersay Historical Society, Comunn Eachdraidh Bharraidh Agus Bhatarsaidh, is the community heritage society for the islands of Barra and Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides. Formed in 1995 and registered as a Scottish charity the same year, it operates Dualchas, the Barra Heritage and Cultural Centre in Castlebay, which opened in 1996.
The centre houses the society's artefacts, documents, photographs and archives on the history and culture of the two islands, including school registers and log books from the 1870s onward, subject files, and lighthouse and business records, and it runs a research room for family history and local research holding historic photographs, old newspapers and a medal collection. It mounts a changing exhibition programme, hosts talks, Gaelic events and spinning classes, and its holdings are listed on the Outer Hebrides heritage services portal. The centre is run by a small staff with volunteers, and in 2025 and 2026 the society received small grants from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, for a Gaelic exhibition and events programme, and from the Corra Foundation, towards seasonal staff at the centre.
