Ayrshire Archaeological and Natural History Society (AANHS)

Active

Description

Ayrshire Archaeological and Natural History Society (AANHS) is a learned society founded in 1947 to promote the study of the history and natural history of Ayrshire, succeeding an earlier association formed in 1877, renamed in 1885 and wound up in 1897. It is a registered Scottish charity and an unincorporated association funded by its members' subscriptions.

Its main output is an illustrated monograph series on Ayrshire subjects, running to more than fifty titles, and Ayrshire Notes, a journal produced jointly with the Ayrshire Federation of Historical Societies about twice a year since 1991 and available in full on the society's website, alongside a digitised archive of out-of-print society publications reaching back to the nineteenth century. The society runs a winter programme of lectures at the University of the West of Scotland's Ayr campus and a conference in October 2026, and it is affiliated to Archaeology Scotland, the British Association for Local History, the Ayrshire Federation of Historical Societies and Ayr Arts Guild.
