Kirkcudbright History Society (KHS)

Description

Kirkcudbright History Society (KHS) is a local history society established in 2001 to promote interest in the history of the town and of the old Stewartry of Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway. It runs a season of monthly talks from October to March at Kirkcudbright Parish Church Hall, delivered in hybrid form with members joining online from overseas, and organises outings and guided walks, including a town walk for Doors Open Days in September 2026.

Its aims include conducting and encouraging research into local history and publishing the results. Its website is built as a repository of members' research, holding local field names, histories of shops and firms, building histories, an image library and a series of articles, among them a 2026 study of the town kirkyard, and the society answers local history and genealogy enquiries by email. It sells its own booklet of memoirs of the district, lists books researched by members, several of them published jointly with the Stewartry Museum, and between 2019 and 2022 recorded prehistoric rock art in the area with Scotland's Rock Art Project. It is an unincorporated association funded by annual subscriptions.
