Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society (DGFHS)

Active

Description

Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society (DGFHS) is a volunteer-run genealogical society for the region, established in 1987 and a registered Scottish charity since 1992. It runs its own research centre at 9 Glasgow Street in Dumfries, open two days a week, holding census returns from 1841 to 1901, Old Parish Register film for every parish in Dumfries and Galloway, memorial inscription surveys, runs of local newspapers on microfiche and a family and local history library.

Its publishing programme, sold through its own online shop, is built on memorial inscription booklets organised by parish, alongside burial registers, a place-names volume and an index of deaths from regional newspapers between 1773 and 1855; its newsletter has appeared three times a year since 1988. Two long-running volunteer projects underpin the publications: a graveyard photographic survey of more than 143,000 images, and a graveyard transcription project begun in 2020 that had covered 196 of the region's 243 graveyards by January 2026.

The society has supplied over 98,000 memorial inscription and parish register records to Findmypast under an affiliation dating from 2019, is a member of the Scottish Association of Family History Societies, and runs a programme of online talks.
