Borders Family History Society (BFHS)

Active

Description

Borders Family History Society (BFHS) is a volunteer-run genealogical society for the Border counties of Scotland, established in 1985 and a registered Scottish charity since 1986, with over 700 members in the UK and overseas. It runs its own research centre and library at 52 Overhaugh Street in Galashiels, open two days a week, holding census returns and monumental inscriptions for most Borders parishes alongside the society's own records, and it is an affiliate library of FamilySearch.

Its volunteers record the inscriptions in burial grounds across the Scottish Borders and publish them as a series of parish volumes, currently around forty titles, together with census, poor law and parish register transcriptions, and they index poor law and police records. In 2026 it added a surname search across its monumental inscription surveys and an index to its magazine, first issued in 1985 and now published three times a year. The society offers a research service in person and by email, belongs to the Scottish Association of Family History Societies, and has worked with the Scottish Borders Archive at Hawick on a number of joint projects.
