Open Virtual Worlds (OVW), St Andrews

Active

Description

Open Virtual Worlds (OVW) is a research group in the School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews, working on virtual reconstructions of historical sites, museums and landscapes, and on immersive heritage exhibits built from them. It describes itself as a group and a team rather than a laboratory or a project, and states a history of more than twenty years of work in the field.

Its reconstructions and exhibits cover Scottish heritage sites and collections, produced with museums, heritage trusts and community organisations, among them Timespan in Helmsdale, the West Highland Museum, Finlaggan on Islay, Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust, Northlight Heritage, Taigh Chearsabhagh in North Uist and the St Andrews Preservation Trust. It has also worked through European heritage projects including CUPIDO, funded through the North Sea Region Programme, and CINE, funded through Interreg Northern Periphery and Arctic, and is an associated partner in the HERITALISE cloud-heritage project.
