St Andrews HCI Research Group (SACHI)

Active

Description

The St Andrews HCI Research Group (SACHI) is the human-computer interaction research group of the School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews, established in February 2011. Its research examines how people interact with computing systems, looking past technical input and output to questions of security, intent, privacy, preference and emotion, with the stated aim of bridging the physical and digital worlds as computation becomes pervasive. The group lists around forty projects under three headings, interaction, visualisation and digital humanities; the digital humanities strand covers quantitative analysis of manuscript scripts and scribal behaviour, the annotation of hieroglyphic texts with Egyptological and museum partners, text mining and visualisation of a literary cityscape and of a science fiction corpus, augmented reality for museum tourism, and the co-design of collaborative writing tools for open knowledge platforms.

Recent work extends into design research and creative technology: a 2025 project on decentralised digital futures with rural communities in Karnataka, exhibited with a university museum; speculative design shown in international museum exhibitions; tangible artefacts addressing human impact on other species; and the encoding of Scottish Gaelic into woven pattern. The group runs a public seminar series, hosts visiting speakers on subjects such as designing for more-than-human creative artificial intelligence, and co-organises workshops at the British HCI conference.
