Description

The Historic Towns Trust (HTT) is an independent registered charity that investigates the histories of towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales and publishes the results as historical atlases and maps. Its charitable objects are the advancement of education and knowledge through the support and promotion of research into the history and topography of cities and towns in Great Britain, and the dissemination of that research, in particular through the publication of historic town atlases and other maps. The British Atlas of Historic Towns project was established in 1963 as part of a pan-European programme to produce atlases at a consistent scale so that the growth of European cities could be compared, and the Trust has operated as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation since 2015. It receives no government funding and relies on donations, legacies, investment income and publication sales, with each new atlas requiring its own fundraising campaign.

The British Historic Towns Atlas runs to seven volumes, published from 1969 onwards, each combining large-scale historical maps with a gazetteer, essays and illustrations drawn from archives. A parallel series of single-sheet Town and City Historical Maps overlays medieval, Georgian and Victorian detail on a modern base map at 1:2500; towns covered include York, Kingston upon Hull, London, Bristol, Canterbury, Beverley, Cambridge, Coventry, Swansea and Perth, with St Andrews in progress. Each map is researched by a local team of historians, archaeologists and geographers working with the Trust's cartographer, usually in association with a university, an archaeological trust or a local society. The Trust also runs Place Detectives, a schools programme with teaching resources, a spring lecture series with the British Association for Local History, and online exhibitions, and its archive is deposited at the Bodleian Library in Oxford for public access.
