Description

The Law and Society Research Group brings together around 65 academics and 12 doctoral researchers working in socio-legal studies at Northumbria Law School. It engages critically with the challenges facing contemporary society at the intersection of law and society, taking an interdisciplinary approach that situates law in its social, cultural, historical and theoretical contexts.

The group promotes socio-legal, empirical and theoretical analysis of laws, legal institutions and processes, and of the social, political, economic and scientific influences on law, legal professions and legal activities, with particular emphasis on sociological and socio-legal methodology including empirical research methods. Its research spans a wide range of topics, from international human rights and mental health to family law and legal history, and it encourages interdisciplinary collaboration on pressing social injustices. Members undertake research, supervise doctoral students and co-ordinate events in their areas of expertise, and outputs include policy papers, briefings, evidence and consultancies alongside academic publications. The group organises research events, research training, collaborative funding applications and joint projects.
