Centre for Statecraft and National Security (CSNS)

Description

The Centre for Statecraft and National Security is a research centre based in the Department of War Studies at King's College London. It was founded in 2025 through the merger of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and the Centre for Grand Strategy, and it works to bring greater depth and expertise to the making of national security policy through research-led professional development and direct engagement with policymakers.

The Centre studies the past, present and future of statecraft, national security and international order, with an emphasis on integrated approaches and long-term strategic thinking. It applies historical and other innovative methods to challenges ranging from terrorism and extremism to great power competition and the pace of technological change. Its work is organised around four themes: strategy and statecraft, defence and deterrence, terrorism and extremism, and technology and transnational challenges. Alongside research it produces policy and position papers, closed-door thematic workshops, public events, bespoke professional programmes and advanced education.

Its research programmes include the Ax:son Johnson Institute for Statecraft and Diplomacy, a consortium of academic institutions of which the Centre is a member; the Global Network on Extremism and Technology; the Cross-Border Conflict Evidence, Policy and Trends programme; the Engelsberg Applied History Programme, run in partnership with the Centre for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge; and an Applied History Undergraduate Fellows Programme that provides an annual stipend to twelve undergraduate fellows a year.
