Free UK Genealogy
ActiveDescription
Free UK Genealogy is a UK charity that provides free online access to family history records drawn from public registers, census returns and parish registers, transcribed by volunteers. It acts as the umbrella organisation for three databases, FreeBMD for birth, marriage and death index entries, FreeCEN for nineteenth century census returns, and FreeREG for parish register baptisms, marriages and burials, together holding over 500 million records, with a fourth project, FreePROBATE, in development. It is committed to open data, releasing transcriptions under open licences so that the records stay freely accessible long term. First registered as a charity in 2003 under the name FreeBMD, it was renamed Free UK Genealogy in 2014 and became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2016, and is run by a trustee board and a small staff team supported by volunteers and public donations.
