Open Up Music
ActiveDescription
Open Up Music is a Bristol based charity that opens up music to young disabled musicians across the UK. Through its Open Orchestras programme it helps special schools create their own accessible orchestras, with around 60 school orchestras running across the UK. It runs the National Open Youth Orchestra, described as the first national ensemble in which disabled and non-disabled musicians aged 11 to 25 develop their skills and perform together, with five regional ensembles in Bristol, Cardiff, London, Bournemouth and Birmingham. It developed the Clarion, an accessible digital instrument playable with any part of the body including eye movement, which the ABRSM exam board has recognised through an Open Music Assessment, the first time the board has recognised a digital instrument. An Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, it grew from pilot work in Bristol from 2006 and the earlier MUSE Project, and became a charity in 2016.
