Institute of Conservation (Icon)
ActiveDescription
Icon, the Institute of Conservation, is the UK professional membership body for the conservation profession and a registered charity, with around 2,500 members including conservators, heritage scientists, conservation craftspeople, and collection care professionals. It was formed in 2005 through the merger of five UK conservation bodies: the Care of Collections Forum, the Institute of Paper Conservation, the Photographic Materials Conservation Group, the Scottish Society for Conservation and Restoration, and the United Kingdom Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Icon sets and upholds professional standards for conservation, runs the Accredited Conservator-Restorer (ACR) accreditation scheme (over 800 accredited members), and supports the profession through training, continuing professional development, policy and advocacy, specialist groups and networks, a code of conduct, and public engagement on the cultural, social and economic value of caring for heritage. Icon is a member of the National Heritage Science Forum.
