Centre for Digital Theology, Durham (CODEC)
ActiveDescription
The Centre for Digital Theology, also known as CODEC, is a research centre in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University. It reflects on the digitalisation of society and its implications for Christian faith and practice, taking as its premise that the emerging digital culture is a new condition in which the church finds itself, one that demands fresh theological conversations and new approaches. Its aim is to research and transform the theological conversation concerning digital culture and to be at the forefront of Digital Theology.
The centre's work is both theoretical and applied: it listens to voices from the public, the pew and the academy, acts as both a servant of and a prophetic voice to the church and society, and develops the practical outcomes of its research into reports, resources and training opportunities. Its research includes long-standing work on biblical literacy and Bible engagement, including studies of digital millennials and the Bible carried out with partners, alongside work on digitally mediated Christianity, online church and worship. Beyond its in-house staff, the centre draws on a wider network of researchers, and it convenes the Global Network for Digital Theology, a forum that seeks to define digital theology as a field of study and to connect academia with religious communities, the technology industry and policymakers. The centre has also run the MA in Digital Theology, described as the first degree of its kind.
