Society for Computers and Law (SCL)
ActiveDescription
The Society for Computers and Law (SCL) is a UK educational charity and membership society for the technology law community, with a UK-wide vision and global reach. Established in 1973, it was set up to promote the use and understanding of information technology in the context of the law; for its first two decades its focus was chiefly on the technical use of IT to support legal practice, and it has since shifted towards the practice of IT law as a specialist subject, encompassing developments such as the world wide web, digital media and artificial intelligence. Its mission is to inform and educate legal and technology professionals, academics, students and the wider audience on the impact of IT on law and legal practice, and to promote best practice, thought leadership and a global tech law community. The Society runs conferences, seminars and webinars, publishes the Computers and Law magazine and a monthly news review, offers online training, and operates a range of specialist groups covering areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud, cybersecurity, privacy and data protection, digital media, financial services, sustainability and technology transactions, alongside groups for trainees and junior lawyers. It supports students and early-career entrants through free or reduced membership and student competitions such as the SCL Student Tech Law Challenge. Membership is open to professionals, academics, trainees and students. The Society is a registered charity (266331) and a company limited by guarantee (01133537), based in Bristol.
