Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR)

Description

The Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR) is a research and innovation facility at the University of Portsmouth, based in the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. It describes itself as the UK's first integrated facility to bring together a full suite of the latest extended reality (XR) technologies under one roof. Building on the University's expertise in creative research and innovation, the centre works across the digital technologies of virtual, augmented and extended reality, with the aim of making XR more accessible to businesses, students and the wider public.

CCIXR houses a suite of specialist studios and labs, including a motion capture studio (full body, facial and hand capture), a volumetric video studio, a photogrammetry and scanning studio, music technology and sound studios, a virtual production and mixed reality studio using SmartStage technology, an XR studio, and a spatial computing lab. Through these facilities it supports training and simulation, immersive art, virtual production, digital skills development and cross-sectoral research and development, with applications spanning the marine, defence, medical and aerospace sectors as well as entertainment and heritage.

The centre offers organisations access to its facilities and expertise, equips graduates with skills for the creative and digital industries, and aims to strengthen the creative and digital economy of Portsmouth and the Solent region. Its projects have included work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, immersive exhibitions and installations, and the Enabling XR Enterprise (eXRe) programme supporting regional businesses to adopt XR.
