Institute for the Modelling of Socio-Environmental Transitions (IMSET), Bournemouth
ActiveDescription
The Institute for the Modelling of Socio-Environmental Transitions (IMSET) is a research institute at Bournemouth University that studies the interplay between population history, cultural practices and the dynamics of environmental systems across different scales. It investigates how past societies were affected by environmental change and how they responded, in order to identify sustainable options for present-day societies facing similar pressures. This work is pursued through bespoke statistical and numerical modelling applied to archaeological, anthropological and past environmental data. The institute is directed by the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology and co-directed with the Department of Life and Environmental Science. Its stated goals include leading transdisciplinary research that integrates archaeological, anthropological and past environmental data with modelling approaches, contributing to sustainability science, building a global collaborative research network, and improving open access to legacy datasets.
