The Critical AI Centre (CrAIC), University of Exeter
ActiveDescription
The Critical AI Centre (CrAIC) is an interdisciplinary research hub at the University of Exeter, based in the Department of Communications, Drama and Film. It is dedicated to exploring the complex and evolving roles and risks associated with conceptions of artificial intelligence in society, drawing on expertise from the arts and humanities, social sciences and computer science. Its mission is to trace, define and shape the emerging field of Critical AI Studies, examining its intersections with software studies, critical data studies, digital culture studies and critical algorithm studies. The centre adopts a long-view perspective, experimenting with ideas in, through and against automated intelligence, and combines scholarly work with public engagement and critical reflection on the societal implications of AI. Its research projects include Favel IA (AI, participatory action research and the question of empathy), Curating the Commons (AI, Wikipedia and the reconstruction of notability), and An Applied Humanities Approach to AI. The centre launched in 2025 with a two-day workshop bringing together international speakers in person and online, and is developing further seminars and research visits.
