Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life, Durham University
ActiveDescription
The Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life (CAL) is an interdisciplinary research centre at Durham University dedicated to the study of algorithmic life, pursuing the question of how we wish to live with and alongside algorithmic technologies. It examines how the rapid rise of algorithmic technologies is reshaping human knowledge, perception and action, and how human life intertwines with algorithms. Its research is organised through four thematic programmes (Generativity; Image and Language; Synthetic Worlds; Being Human) and four clusters (Decisions; Data; Publics; Forms of Life). The Decisions cluster examines how algorithmic life is changing the character of decisions through the hybrid knowledges of humans and algorithms; the Data cluster advances new understandings of what data is and does in a world where lives and life-chances are increasingly shaped by data generated and analysed by algorithms; the Publics cluster investigates the political and public tensions and resistances that characterise contemporary algorithmic life; and the Forms of Life cluster addresses how literary, media and scientific practices give rise to novel algorithmic forms of life. The Centre is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and works with partner institutions including the University of York, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Amsterdam and Duke University. It offers Visiting Fellowships and an Associates scheme and hosts workshops and events.
