National Records of Scotland (NRS)
ActiveDescription
National Records of Scotland (NRS) is a Non-Ministerial Department of the Scottish Government. Its purpose is to collect, preserve and produce information about Scotland's people and history and make it available to inform current and future generations. NRS performs the registration and statistical functions of the Registrar General for Scotland and the archival functions of the Keeper of the Records of Scotland, including maintaining the archives as one of Scotland's five National Collections. It is the repository for the public and legal records of Scotland, holding records spanning the 12th to the 21st centuries. NRS publishes a wide range of statistical data about the people and population of Scotland, including Scotland's census and vital-events statistics on births, deaths, marriages and life expectancy. Through Scotland's People, the official Scottish genealogy resource, together with its public search rooms and online catalogue, it provides access to these records for researchers and the public.
