The Association of Police and Court Interpreters (APCI)

Active

Description

The Association of Police and Court Interpreters (APCI), founded in 1974, is a professional association of qualified and experienced public service interpreters working within the Criminal Justice System. It represents its members' interests to work providers and government, with the stated objects of raising standards in the profession and fostering good relations between members and the users of their services. The Association holds that legal interpreting requires specific skills gained only through specialised training by accredited bodies and continuing professional development, and it campaigns for protection of title to secure professional recognition and sustainable working terms, conditions and remuneration. APCI was a founder member of Professional Interpreters for Justice (PI4J) and, since 2009, has run a member-funded campaign opposing the Ministry of Justice's outsourcing of interpreting across the justice sector under the Framework Agreement. It is a member of the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA) and the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs (FIT), and operates a call centre, APCI Response, used by work providers to contact interpreters.
