Clarity (Clarity International)

Active

Description

Clarity is described as the world's largest organisation focused on promoting plain legal language and design, with more than 650 members across 50 countries and official representatives in around 30 countries. It is run by a team of volunteers who advocate locally for the use of plain legal language in place of legalese. Its members (judges, lawyers, government officials, scholars, teachers, corporate and NGO representatives, and plain language practitioners such as writers, editors, researchers, consultants and trainers) work to make laws, contracts and public documents easier for citizens to find, understand and use. Founded in the UK in 1983 by a British solicitor, Clarity publishes the biannual Clarity Journal (a source of plain language news and legal design research), hosts a biennial international conference, and supports regional and local plain language activities organised by country representatives.
