Right to Roam
ActiveDescription
Right to Roam is a campaign group seeking to bring a Right to Roam Act to England and Wales so that many more people can connect with the natural world. Since 2021 the campaign has organised peaceful mass trespasses into areas of countryside from which the public are excluded, drawing on participants including botanists, ornithologists, astronomers, dancers, singers, citizen scientists, outdoors specialists and poets. Its actions follow the access code governing Scotland's right of responsible access, respecting privacy, crops and nature while seeking to leave a positive trace and practise deep care for the natural world, an ethic the campaign calls Wild Service. The campaign argues that a right to roam would replace the current default of exclusion with a default of responsible access to land and water, modelled on Scotland's Land Reform Act 2003, while retaining restrictions to protect privacy, gardens, crops, sensitive wildlife and public safety. Its vision is of a countryside in which people enjoy the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature and also serve as its guardians.
