Stop Ecocide International (SEI)

Active

Description

Stop Ecocide International (SEI) is an expert advisory organisation working at the heart of the development of ecocide law. Co-founded in 2017, it is the driving force behind the growing global movement to make ecocide (mass damage and destruction of nature) an international crime, recognised alongside genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Its core work is supporting diplomatic progress and fostering global cross-sector support, providing expert advice on ecocide law's rationale, implications and progress at diplomatic and government level across multiple jurisdictions, with particular focus on the International Criminal Court. The organisation's charitable Foundation commissioned the drafting of the Independent Expert Panel definition of ecocide, published in 2021, which has shaped ecocide legislation proposed and adopted in parliaments worldwide. SEI tracks, reports on and amplifies the legal initiative and convenes and participates in fora from UN COPs to industry conferences and civil-society events. With teams and associate groups in over 50 countries, it collaborates with diplomats, politicians, lawyers, corporate leaders, NGOs, indigenous and faith groups, academics, grassroots campaigns and individuals. SEI leads overall strategy, policy, direction and communications, while its charitable entity, the Stop Ecocide Foundation (Netherlands, ANBI status), serves as the main fundraising and commissioning vehicle.
